Today we are to travel 800 years back in time to find out how a small fisherman’s village of the 12th century turned into a powerful state, which by the end of the 14th century united all Scandinavian countries, why it was here that bishop Absalon decided to build a palace – fortress, which 600 years later turned into castle Christiansborg, which was so much envied by the Hanseatic Union that it decided to seize the Absalon’s fortress at any cost and «demolish it completely», why the Danes are considered to be the founders of Estonian capital Tallinn, and the story of the sculpture of the father of the Danish constitution Frederik VII, standing opposite the entrance to the castle of Christiansborg. Danish history is full of legends and looking at the castle of Christiansborg we will open many of these fascinating stories.

Copenhagen is the city of contrasts, therefore, no surprise that on the one hand, the Danish kingdom is democratic, while on the other, they are the oldest monarchy in the world, as today’s queen Margarethe II may trace back her family tree by 1000 years. Let us sort out how these colliding concepts may co-exist in the Danish society. During the excursion we will speak about the royal family and queen’s powers, about the political system of the kingdom. We will hear the legends from the Danish past and stories of its present, we will recollect the history of the tower and throne halls, and also the royal library and the long hall, where the queen organizes the New Year banquet for foreign ambassadors and other guests. Here we will see a series of 17 tapestries – it took 10 years to make them and the treasury spent on them 120 million Danish crowns.

We will tell you how Absalon’s fortress turned into the political centre of the Danish kingdom and then we will see the ruins of the fortress, which have been carefully kept in the cellars of Christiansborg castle. It seems that these huge stones are filled with the spirit of time and if we listen attentively, we will hear the far echo of the old battles, once seen by these stones.

After our excursion you will be able to get on the top of the tower of Christiansborg castle, where from the height of 106 metres it is possible to enjoy the views of the historic part of Copenhagen. In addition, I advise you to plan an individual visit to the museum of royal carts and carriages, the royal stables, military Arsenal museum, Christiansborg Church and the Thorvaldsen museum of sculpture, located in the vicinity of Christiansborg.

Attention: the castle of Christiansborg is not a museum, but the working residence of queen Margarethe II and the seat of the Danish Parliament. Therefore, the time of the tour should be agreed, since it is not always possible to get inside.

Tour length: 1.5 - 2 hours.

Tour price:
1 - 4 people 150 euros for a group
5 - 12 people 180 euros for a group
+12 people upon request.

Entrance tickets are not included into the tour price.

Specific features of the tour: for all those striving to find out what modern Denmark is like, those who love ancient and modern architecture, connoisseurs of history and nice cityscapes.

Welcome to Copenhagen, the city with time-tested traditions, though, everything once started with a small fishermen’s village. Empires grow and collapse, geniuses are born and die, more and more technologies are coming to our world. All these processes are united by the word time, which flies like an arrow. To record the flow of time people create history and today I would like to tell you about the history of Copenhagen.

We will plunge into the history of the Danish capital, will make monuments, buildings and sculptures speak. We will walk along the streets of Copenhagen and from the contemporary city we will go back in time to the epoch of bishop Absalon – a restless warrior, builder and a clergyman. Today we are interested in Copenhagen from the historic viewpoint: where Denmark comes from, who the Danes are, when and where everything began, who the Vikings were, how Copenhagen developed and has been built up, where genuine original buildings have been preserved, squares, sculptures etc... all these questions will be answered during our walk around the city.

Our route will include one of the oldest squares in Copenhagen, with the oldest city fountain called Caritas as well as the Church of Our Lady, erected here owing to the efforts of bishop Absalon, the founder of Copenhagen. We will travel along the book of history, finding out how and when Denmark emerged, who the Vikings were, how it happened so that at the end of the 14th century all the power in Scandinavia belonged to the Danish king, who Martin Luther was and why all today’s Danish churches are Lutheran.

After that we will travel down the river of history to the buildings created for the scientific purposes by the Danish king Christian IV. This is the whole ensemble of buildings that has been preserved. Next we will move to the crossroads with the pedestrian street and to the seat of the Danish Parliament, castle Christiansborg. We will hear fascinating stories about the Danish king-builder Christian IV, whose reign was the longest, about other Danish kings and complicated relations between the Danes and the Swedes and the visit of Peter the Great to Copenhagen with a 40-thousand army. History book will reveal its myths and legends about the founder of the city bishop Absalon, about the growth of Copenhagen, what Hanseatic merchants envied so much that they decided to demolish Absalon’s fortress, about the slave-holding Denmark. We will also find out how in the 18th century the Danes managed to become European leaders in exporting sugar without any domestic sugar production.

Furthermore, we will see the facts in the history of Copenhagen, related to monasterial orders, where the times were severe and set their rules and it was necessary to install a whipping post and the place of public executions. Here we will see interesting aspects of the system of justice in modern Denmark; look at the former debtor’s prison, where a person could virtually stay forever. Next, we will come up to the modernity and will come to the City hall square – the heart of contemporary Copenhagen.

Here we will learn about the main features of the Danish society, looking at the examples of their underground and the City hall building, will see zero kilometre, hear the legend about the fight between the bull and the dragon, will greet fairy-tale teller Andersen and Tivoli amusement park, the blowers watching the order in the Danish kingdom; and we will also try to understand why the Danes have been voted the happiest nation worldwide for years. Are you ready to set off and travel in time with Copenhagen? Then off we go!!!

Tour length: 1.5 hours.

Tour price: 100 euros for a group of 1 - 5 people, for each additional 15 euros.

Specific features of the tour: this tour will be exciting to all people who like history, beautiful architecture and city scenery. You will learn a lot of legends from the Danish past and will also find out what lifestyle contemporary Denmark has. It is ideal for those people who have already been to Copenhagen and would like to look at the city they like from another perspective.

Copenhagen is not only the city with high life standards and the happiest people on Earth, but it is also the city of contrasts: the city, where the number of bicycles is 5 times more than cars; the city, where drug dealing is next to the Danish Parliament; the city, where nobody works overtime, but everybody has enough money; the city, where modern architecture perfectly matches Danish history and looks harmonious near the architectural solutions made 400 years ago.

We invite you to travel and see architectural Copenhagen. We will visit the area of modern architecture Orestad, where we will look at the buildings, voted in 2008 and 2010 the best in the world at the World Architecture Festival, where some 700 projects from around the world compete every year in different categories for the world title.

We will see the area, which was not existent on the city map just 16 years ago, will go to the centre of the Danish Commerce, a kind of the Danish Manhattan, and here we will start our excursion near the building of the Danish mass media – DR byen, since it was the starting point for the development of Orestad. We will mention the conditions under which the project of the “Danish Manhattan” was conceived, what were the principles and priorities for the city authorities in the 1980s, how it became possible to combine business architecture with residential development, how the Danish downtown indeed turned into the area of experimental architecture and who was awarded the Pritzker Architecture prize, an analogue to the Nobel Prize in this field.

Architecture in Copenhagen:

After that we will go by underground to the very centre of Orestad, where we will see the first industrial and office premises of the area; we will look at the largest shopping mall; the best residential estate in the world in 2010; will learn about the automated library, open 24 hours a day and will visit the experimental high school with futuristic design, a bright example of academic studies, self-consciousness and individual work, where there are practically no classrooms and where students are virtually independent.

At our final stop we will meet the works completed by Danish company BIG, specializing in unusual architecture and building houses around the world. Here this company completed the construction of VM house, made in the best traditions of the Danish openness and transparency, where everything is visible, as well as the ”Mountain” house or, it is also called, apartment – gardens, the project voted the best world architectural solution in 2008. Here we will also visit the biggest hotel in Copenhagen, where from the height of 80 metres we will enjoy the panorama of Orestad. If the weather is good, we will see the bridge running from Denmark to Swedish Malmo, will speak of the future and present of Orestad, people living here, and about other aspects of life that, besides architecture, make Copenhagen a truly unique city.

Tour length: 1 - 1.5 hours.

Tour price: 100 euros for a group of 1 - 5 people, for each additional 15 euros. The metro ticket fare is not included into the tour price (an extra cost).

Specific features of the tour: this tour will be exciting to all people who like extraordinary architecture and beautiful city scenery. You will see the area of experimental architecture, will take the best underground in Europe and will learn what makes Copenhagen so unusual and unique based on the example of Orestad area.

If you are looking for as many dazzling impressions as possible from your visit to Copenhagen, go to the castle of Rosenborg, an exciting journey across the history of Denmark, during which, we will visit the royal treasury and will see some genuine masterpieces of the Danish past.

Rosenborg is a real castle of the Renaissance period, surrounded with a ditch and a lift bridge. This is the oldest castle in Copenhagen and at the same time it is the smallest one. In the greenery of the surrounding park it seems to be a toy, fabulous castle of the Sleeping Beauty. This impression is not accidental, because from the very beginning, in 1606, it was designed not as a full-size castle, but as a summer country residence for the king. The place where the castle is located was far from the city in the 17th century.

It was here, in the fresh air, in the picturesque nature that Danish king Christian IV had the idea to build a small house for recreation, to be surrounded with a rose garden. Those were roses that laid the basis for the whole park around the castle – the oldest royal park in Denmark, where we will have a walk too. The word «rose» gave the name to the palace – «Rosenborg» - «The Castle of Roses». King Christian IV was keen on rose growing. He ordered varieties from different countries and created new ones by himself. These roses, the roses of the Renaissance epoch are still there near the castle.

Rosenborg has been preserved in its original design of the first quarter of the 17th century, and it has not ever been on fire. Today it is a museum, during the visit we will speak about the history and culture of Denmark, learn more about the Danish kings of the Middle Ages and find out why it is Christian IV that is considered the most popular monarch in the Danish history. We will see numerous valuable tapestries, paintings, furniture and porcelain, as well as presents, received by kings at different times from foreign monarchs. The excursion will include various legends of the Danish past, go to the long hall with the throne (according to Frederick III, having magical properties).

Tour length: 1.5 hours.

Tour price:
1 - 4 people 150 euros for a group
5 - 12 people 180 euros for a group
+12 people upon request.

The ticket fee at Rosenborg castle is not included into the tour price (at extra cost).

Specific features of the tour: An opportunity to plunge into the history of Denmark within the shortest time possible, see the way kings lived, visit the royal treasury, find out information about modern life in Denmark. This tour will be interesting for people who like history, old and ancient items, as well as for those who prefer active tourism and would like to have maximum information within a short period of time.

Important: the tour to Rosenborg castle may be a wonderful addition to the highlight tour around Copenhagen. We do not know what has brought you to Copenhagen: cheap flight tickets, curiosity, love to tasty beer or nostalgia for childhood and fairy-tales of Andersen. But I am confident that you have come to one of the unrivalled and unique capitals in Europe. During our 2-hour walk we will see nearly all interesting landmarks of the city in its central, historic and tourist parts. Our journey starts in the City hall square in the very heart of Copenhagen, where we learn about modern Copenhagen.

On the one hand, the Danish capital is reasonably considered the pearl of Scandinavia, but on the other, this is the city of controversies where people sell light drugs one kilometre from the seat of the Danish Parliament; the city, with very rare traffic jams and the number of bicycles is 5 times more than the number of cars in the streets; the city, where people pay some of the highest taxes in the world and, nevertheless, feel fine about it; here a sandwich is a cult, but Copenhagen is also the gastronomic centre of Northern Europe.

What makes the Danes happy?

Then we will have a walk to the historic part of Copenhagen, where everything started for this city. We will see the place of public executions, Caritas, the oldest fountain in the city, Reformation memorial, to commemorate the period after which all the Danes were converted from Catholics to Protestants, Copenhagen university building, the oldest high school called Regents, where the poorest students stayed, the Round tower, the Museum of Post and Telegraph.

And here we are, opposite the house of Parliament – the political heart of Denmark. Here we will plunge into the history of the Danish kingdom, will speak about the founder of Copenhagen bishop Absalon, find out about the underwater sculptures and legends and legends of the ancient Nordics. We will also understand what makes Copenhagen so unique compared to other capitals worldwide and why the locals have been voted the happiest nation on the planet.

Having enjoyed the view of Absalon statue, the Stock Exchange building, Parliament, and St. Nicolai’s Church we will go on walking along the longest pedestrian street in Europe – Stroget to Royal Square and Nyhavn quay, the tourist mecca in Copenhagen. There we will get back to the medieval times, find out how Denmark once became one of the largest exporters of sugar in Europe, without any domestic sugar production; recollect fairy-tale teller Andersen, who adored living on Nyhavn quay; will talk about the royal family and interesting facts in the relations between Denmark and Russia, established over 500 years ago.

Tour length: 1.5 - 2 hours.

Tour price:
1 - 4 people   150 euros for a group
5 - 12 people 180 euros for a group

Specific features of the tour: If you like legends, beautiful city architecture, would like to learn about the recipe of Danish happiness, visit the landmarks of the city accompanied by the parson, who has been living in the capital of the Danish kingdom for over 10 years, then this excursion is for you.
