DenmarkTravel

Best regards, Denmark Travel team.

We invite you to walk around Christiania, which resembles a medieval village, hidden in the heart of Copenhagen. Here you will see wooden houses, complete absence of automobiles, in stead you will experience flowerbeds with mixed flowers, the air filled with the smoke of cigarettes with cannabis and most weird dwellers of the Danish capital with their alternative lifestyle.

All this is so unique that you will not be able to see it anywhere else worldwide. This is a controversial and disputable place, but 100% worth your attention, if you happen to come to Copenhagen. Even local authorities have yielded to this island of subcultures and have gave Christiania a semi-autonomous status with protected right of free citizens to their honestly conquered Copenhagen land.

We suggest you go to this "free town" with the guide on the Land of the Vikings and learn more about it. We will walk along the streets of Christiania, drop into unusual stalls, spots and shelters. We will find out about the governance in this "separate country" and what locals live by.

We will also make architectural discoveries since the majority of new buildings in Christiania do not have any analogues and were built as DIY. There are many strange and interesting things for a curious tourist. The name of the game is not to take out the camera in Pusher street, where light drug dealing has been 24/7 over the past 40 years. Since people do it illegally, they will not be happy to be recorded.

We will learn the main rules Christiania dwellers live by and how they make their living. We are to find a number of funny and weird life stories of the locals and of the solutions, which made this town relatively safe and truly "free". We will make a large Christiania tour and learn who cares of the environment in the ”free town”, where are such famous places as Grå Hall (Christiania meeting point) and the kindergarten (there is a kindergarten here!), as well as how to get to the famous restaurant "Loppen" (open from 17:00 every day, and where, you will not believe!, it is required to book a table in advance) and "Opera" club, drop into the female forgery and the original shop called "Do It Yourself", will find the original building called "The Banana House" and will have a rest on the lawn near the lake, with the aromas of marihuana and more than relaxed atmosphere.

We will also have a walk along the main street, where light drug dealing is non-stop, where it is possible to buy a "pot" of any strength and try it just in situ in one of the local open-air cafés. How it happened so that drugs are freely traded in the free town within just a kilometre from the building of the Parliament, who local pushers are, where all these products come from and who is behind it you will learn during our walk.

Tour length: 1 - 1,5 hours.

Tour price:
1 - 4 people 150 euros for a group
5 - 12 people 180 euros for a group
+12 people upon request.

Specific features of the tour: will be good for those, who seek something unusual and also for all the people, who like new impressions.

"Kronborg on the starboard side!". This command traditionally tells the Danish sailors that they are coming back home. Why only now, as domestic straits Skagerrak and Kattegat are already behind? Well, because it is here, in the Oresund strait, is a powerful outpost – the castle of Kronborg – a milestone on the way from the North Sea to the Baltic Sea in the national danish mentality. This is one of the major symbols, as people say now, of being a Dane. Kronborg (Shakespeare’s castle in Elsinore), seems to be a huge ship that has its towers as masts, cuts the whirlpool of the fast Oresund with its nose of the front bastion, as if coming out to stop the vessels rushing in the strait. Why? To answer this question we will have to plunge into the rough waves – waves of history and literature. Well, yes, literature as well. Because our tour is called: "In Hamlet's footsteps".

Erik of Pomerania

However, we will start our excursion not with the castle but with the market square in the town of Helsingor. The British call it Elsinor and it is situated 45 km from Copenhagen. Here, the square is adorned with the bronze monument to Danish king of the 15th century Erik of Pomerania. He determined the way to the greatness and prosperity of the town, which one and a half centuries later, in Shakespeare’s times, became the pearl of Northern Europe.

Шекспир

Paved narrow streets start from the square like rays – we will certainly follow them. Architecture here has little changed since Shakespeare’s epoch. It is not known for sure whether the great dramatist strolled along the streets of Helsingor, but his close friends, English actors from London, who regularly toured and performed here, were definitely regular visitors of this area. The house where they normally stayed has been preserved – it is in the street, which used to be quay. This is a small, slightly rickety house that saw many dramatic events in actors’ lives, including tragic love.

Having walked along the streets of Helsingor, we will finally head for the castle itself – that very castle, the setting for tragedy Hamlet by Shakespeare. By the way, if there is something genuine in this play – it is Kronborg, described by the author with unbelievable detail. It is the only true historic “character”.

Moving from one room to another, we will be able to follow the plot of the play part by part. Upstairs on the flag bastion, we will see the magnificent, rough panorama of the strait and will immediately understand why the Ghost comes here. We will have a glimpse of the queen’s living room, where the poor Polonius, further mistakenly killed by Hamlet, was hiding and eavesdropping behind the fruit-frame. This is the place of the renowned monolog: “Be, or not to be, that is the question”, which we will also find out during the castle tour.

The appearance of a ghost

The excursion will finish near the castle at Hamlet’s grave (unfortunately, imaginary). It was here that the price «talked» to court jester Yorick’s skull. And if lucky, we will also be able to visit Ophelia’s spring nearby. If the local authorities of Helsingor finish its restoration by the time of our arrival.

Hamlet's tomb

Tour length: 3 hours, if you come to Helsingør by yourselves, 5 hours with the transfers from / to Copenhagen.

The tour price: 320 euros for 2 adults and a child (under 11), including entrance tickets and guide’s service. It is possible to organize the return transfer at the price of 150 euros.

Specific features of the tour: this is a designer tour for the curious and those who like Shakespeare’s heritage. We will have to walk a lot, visit the historic centre of Helsingor, hear legends from the Danish history, find out more about the greatest work by Shakespeare, enjoy the sea air and views of the Swedish coast.

Imagine that you are in Denmark on a short visit. And in your travel plans you have only capital city - Copenhagen. And so you want to know more about this country, its history and culture, get to know modern Denmark and obtain the most vivid impressions. In this case, you have to be on our tour of the three royal palaces: Rosenborg, Amalienborg and Christiansborg. Three different palaces represent three different architectural styles, three different historical era, and most importantly - all three palaces directly related to modern Denmark.

Rosenborg castle

Rosenborg (Rosenborg) - a representative of the Renaissance epoch. It's a real castle surrounded by a moat with a bridge. This is the oldest of the three palaces and offered the smallest. Among the surrounding greenery the castle seems to be a Sleeping Beauty's fairy-tale castle. From the very beginning in 1606, the decision was made to build here a summer cottage for a king, not as a real castle. Here, outside the city walls, danish King Christian IV (reign 1588 - 1648) wanted to build himself a small house for rest, surrounded by a rose garden. Yes, the whole park complex around the castle started with roses and became the oldest royal park in Denmark. The word "Rose" became the basis for the name of the palace - "Rosenborg" - "Rose Castle". King Christian IV was fond of roses. These roses, rose of the Renaissance period, still growing near the castle.

Rosenborg remained in its original form from the first quarter of the 17th century. Now it is a museum, where we will talk about the history and culture of Denmark at that time, kings and international relations with different countries. You will see many valuable tapestries, paintings, furniture, porcelain and luxury things in this palace. There will be plenty gifts received at different times of the foreign monarchs like weapons, ivory and amber products. Of particular interest are the cellars of the castle that houses the treasures of Danish kings, their crowns and weapons. The cellars are still preserved huge barrels of oldest wine in the world Christian IV period from 17th century. According to the tradition Danish Queen Margrethe II treats her guests with this wine, once a year - January 1, during New Year reception at Christiansborg palace.

Amalienborg palace

Amalienborg palace. One of the main tasks of the royal guards - security of the royal residence Amalienborg. Every day at 11:30 guards come out of their barracks, located in Rosenborg castle and marching brave steps to the residence of Amalienborg, where every day at 12.00 you can watch the changing of the Royal Guard. It's a very picturesque sight: soldiers in old uniforms, in tall bearskin hats performing the old military ritual.

The original palace Amalienborg was not intended for the royal family, but for the noble families of the Danish kingdom. King Frederik V (reign 1746-1766) decided to found on the edge of Copenhagen new center of its capital, where the streets from the main square should have been diverge like sun rays, according to the latest French fashion. In the center of the square we can see the statue of Frederick V at the image of the Roman emperor, made by the french sculptor Jacques Saly. One of the buildings of the palace ensemble into a museum devoted to the Glücksburg dynasty, the dynasty of our Queen. Here you can see the interiors of the 19th - 20th centuries, personal belongings of members of the royal family and personal valuables. During a walk through the museum, you will learn the history of Queen Margrethe II, among the other danish kings of the past.

Christiansborg palace

Christiansborg is the main palace of the country, located in the heart of the Danish capital. Here sits the Parliament (Folketing), the Queen's Chamber representative office, reception of prime - minister and the Supreme Court. The current building Christiansborg - in fact is a third palace, which was built on this site. The first was built as the main royal residence in baroque style in 1736, but in 1794 it was badly damaged by fire. The royal family had to move to Amalienborg castle during the reconstruction works. The palace has been impeccably renovated in 1850, but after 90 years it suffered again from another fire, and for a long time Christiansborg lay in ruins. The current building of the palace was rebuilt in the period 1907 - 1928 years in the neo-baroque style by the architect Thorvald Jorgensen. 106-meter tower of the palace - the highest in Copenhagen. Under the current Christiansborg, can be seen the ruins of previous buildings, including the very first Bishop Absalon fortress, from 1167, which is considered the founding year of Copenhagen.

Being in Christiansborg, we'll visit queen Margareth's representative chamber, throne room and the balcony where all danish monarchs were proclaimed. The interiors items from Baroque / Rococo stiles are organically combined with the works of contemporary artists. The most valuable is a series of tapestries on the history of Denmark, adorn the walls of the Knights' Hall. It was conceived as a gift to Queen Margrethe II of its 50th anniversary, but was completed to hers 60th anniversary.

Tour length: 5 hours.

Tour price: 300 euros for 2 adults and a child (under 11 years). The price includes the guide’s services for 5 hours. Transfer and entrance tickets to all the palaces are not included and should be paid separately. The price for the transfer starts from 150 euros and depends from the number of people in the group.

Specifics of the tour: you will gwt an opportunity to plunge into the history of Denmark, to see how lived the danish kings of the past, to visit the royal treasury and to learn what a modern Denmark looks like. The tour will be interesting to fans of history and ancient architecture, as well as for all who are interested in active tourism and wants to see the maximum during your stay in Copenhagen.

“Architecture is exponent of morals” once noted Honore de Balzac, and we fully agree with him. We invite you dear travellers to discover the architecture of Copenhagen and get to know this fascinating city, where modern buildings are erected next to the architectural solutions, which are 400-years old, where nothing seems to be able to slow down the power of engineering, pressure of time and construction technologies, eventually, expressed in concrete, glass and metalwork.

Architecture of Copenhagen is a delight for public as well as for professional architects or designers. There quite a few architectural masterpieces and I offer to use a car to speed up travelling across the city.

We will start our tour from the symbol of Copenhagen – the Little Mermaid, who has been sitting on Langelinje quay for nearly 100 years now. Having seen the main symbol of Copenhagen, we will get into the car and rush towards Churchill park nearby, where we will hear the story of creating the island of Sjaelland, where Copenhagen is situated, we will also see the New Royal Opera House and the Anglican St Albany church.

Having relished the quay views, we will set off to the winter royal residence Amalienborg. Here we will learn the story of the epoch of Frederik V, find out more about the royal guardians, and look at the most magnificent church in Copenhagen – the Marble church, and, if lucky, will see Aleksandr Nevsky Orthodox church located not far away.

The rhythm of life in Copenhagen:

The next stop will be made in one of the most expensive areas of Copenhagen – New Harbour (Nyhavn), the place present on almost all the postcards of Copenhagen. Here we will find out the history of this district, and also see the house, where fairy-tale teller H.C. Andersen once lived.

Next to Nyhavn there is the historic centre of the city, where we will certainly go. During the following stop we will learn how Copenhagen was founded, will visit one of the most popular tourist attractions – Amager square, will see the heart of political life in Denmark – Christiansborg palace, the Supreme court building and Thorvaldsens museum, will find out who gave the green light to the Constitution of Denmark, who built the stock exchange building and what is the meaning of the underwater sculptures in the city canal.

Having made a small ride along city streets we will arrive at the place, where the pedestrian street is divided by two squares. That was the place for public executions in the Middle Ages, that was where criminals were imprisoned, that the place where the previous buildings of the city hall were located and here you will hear the story of Copenhagen of that time. After a history brief, we will come back to modern times and see the main cathedral of Copenhagen, built in the Neoclassical style – the Church of Our Lady.

Well, here we are in front of the City hall square – here we will have our final stop during the tour. We will see the founder of Copenhagen – bishop Absalon, learn the history of the Lure Blowers, meet great fairy-tale teller Andersen and the Tivoli amusement park, find out where zero kilometre is situated and what is Stroget and why this pedestrian street is called so.

If you want to learn and see more of Copenhagen, than you could do during the walking tour or taking a city bus tour, then a cycling tour is ideal for you! The bicycle is the most popular means of transport in Copenhagen. There are about 650 000 bicycles in the city, which is 5 times more than the number of cars on the city streets. Exorbitantly expensive parking space in the city centre and expensive public transport — all this is designed to make the person start bicycling. Nearly all the city citizens use bicycles, even those who have 2 cars, even ministers, being a role model for the public.

Therefore, traffic jams are a rare case, and the air is pure even in the city centre. It is the paradise for cyclists: convenient bicycle paths, special traffic lights, parking lots near every house, underground station or a store. A cyclist feels confident and safe in Denmark. Would you like to become a resident of Copenhagen for a day? Then off we go — by bike!

We love bikes:

Our tour will start with the highlights of the central part of the city: the City hall square and building, Dragon fountain, the «zero mark» pole, Utzon barometer, the sculpture of the Lure Blowers, the longest pedestrian street in Europe - Strøget, monument to Andersen, Tivoli amusement park, Carlsberg glyptotheca. After that we will ride to Kalvebod quay, where will be able to look at one of the masterpieces of the Danish modern architecture — the building called Crystal, known for its advanced technological solutions. During the ride along the quay we will see the house on water, the place where the locals swim in the city canal, unusual residencies “Gemini”, former silo-towers, converted into premium class apartments, "Aller - boat house" and the elite residential area called "Havneholmen".*

Further, we are to see the historic part of the city: where the city was founded as early as in the 12th century. We will come to the seat of the parliament, Chrisniansborg, visit the Amager square, Storks fountain, where the royal porcelain «Royal Copenhagen» and Georg Jensen’s silver design store are located. We will mention extraordinary bishop Absalon in Højbro square and will find out how a small fisherman’s village managed to turn into one of the most beautiful capitals in Northern Europe. We will see a unique sculptural ensemble Agneta and The Sea King, St. Nicolai Church and Thorvaldsens museum. We will see Nyhavn quay, famous for its colourful houses, royal palaces and guardians wearing bear fur hats, Gefion fountain with its Scandinavian saga, and finally the symbol of the city – the Little Mermaid!

If you are interested in our tours, it means that you are seeking something special, more than just facts and dates, which you could find on a standard bus tour. We understand you quite well, because also prefer fiction to newspaper news. Welcome to the world of our tours. Here will be stories about people, who lived or live in Copenhagen, history of streets and squares, what happened at a particular place 100 - 200 years ago ...

Besides, we can share our personal experience about living in Copenhagen, since we have been living here for many years and we know perfectly well city life and national features of the locals. Our task is to get you hooked by Copenhagen, so coming back home you would say: ”Wow, it was really cool! I even could not imagine that there could be so much interesting to learn about the country which was hard to find on the map”.

We will not dwell on those sights which are visible to everybody. Instead, we will try to get a glimpse behind the "scenes" and learn delicate stories about different parts of Copenhagen. Do you want to know the stories hiding behind the facades of the buildings, sculptures and monuments? Then you cannot do without us, you guide on the land of the Vikings.

Our tour starts in the City hall square, opposite the monument to H. C. Andersen. Here you will learn about the City hall, Tivoli amusement park, the sculpture of Lure Blowers, of the specific features of the City hall tower, something that you still do not know about the fairy-tale teller Andersen, about the best underground in the world and longest pedestrian street in Europe - Strøget.

Then, long the pedestrian street, we will get to the historic part of the city. Here you are awaited by the oldest city market and complicated history of the churches nearby. You will probably get butterflies in your stomach – you will see the bloody spot – the place of public executions, will learn about their procedures in Denmark.

After that we will travel to the Latin block and see the oldest high school of the city. We will look at the beautiful building of the mid-17th century – the Round tower, which keeps many stories, one of which is about Russian Emperor Peter the Great. On our way to the heart of the pedestrian street, we will see the museum of Post and Telegraph and will talk about contemporary Copenhagen.

The crossroads between 2 pedestrian streets is the very centre of Copenhagen. It is always busy here; there is a lot to see and to do. Here we will learn about one of the city symbols, the building of the Old Stock Exchange and Thorvaldsens museum of sculptures. You will learn, by the way, why the palace of Christiansborg, the seat of the Parliament, has such a strange shape, and will also enrich your knowledge about the founder of Copenhagen and one of the most warlike Danish rulers – bishop Absalon.

Next, we will move to the Royal Square, where we you will hear the history of the most luxurious hotel in Copenhagen – D’Angleterre and the Royal Theatre.* Later we will slowly walk to the tourist mecca of our city – Nyhavn canal quay, with its numerous colourful cafés and restaurants, with moored yachts and tourist boats. Nyhavn is a place, where fairy teller Andersen loved to live in different locations, because this place is not far from the Royal Opera and Ballet Theatre, which Andersen adored.

Further, we will be met by the picturesque quay of Langelinje, with the winter royal residence Amalienborg, the marble church, which gives a wonderful view of the grand building of the New Royal Opera, Ophelia beach, and the Little Mermaid sitting on a large stone. On this cosy quay we will also learn how the island of Sjaelland, where Copenhagen is situated, was created. I will also point at the place on the quay, which will confirm my story.

Finally, we will share our experience about different trips around Copenhagen, how to get a boat trip on city canals almost free of charge and will answer any other questions regarding your stay in Copenhagen.

*Extended highlight walking tour. The tour may be extended: we offer you to go to the ultramodern area of Ørestad by the best underground worldwide. A journey by underground is an equally compulsory part of a visit to Copenhagen as visiting the Little Mermaid or a walk along the pedestrian street. The Danish underground is clean, not deep, fully electrified, voted by many transport experts – the best in the world, where you can feel as if you a train driver, if you sit in the first row seats.

Ørestad is the area of ultramodern and unusual architecture in Copenhagen. 16 years ago this area did not exist on Copenhagen maps, 3 years ago it was still unmarked on Google maps, and today it is the centre of modern architecture. On the way to Ørestad underground goes up to the surface and turns into the ground train, opening varied architecture for curious tourists. This is what makes, to my mind, this trip a must in the programme of any visit to Copenhagen.

Travelling in Ørestad by underground we will see the dancing towers of the Bella Sky hotel. On the other side of the underground there are apartment gardens (VM Mountain) – this architectural project was voted the best residential building in the World Architecture Festival in 2008.

Having enjoyed the views of the architecture and space of the ultramodern Ørestad, we will get on the train and go to the official symbol of Copenhagen – the Little Mermaid. Then we will learn the history of Gefion fountain and walk along Langelinje quay, where we will look into the winter royal residence Amalienborg, see the gigantic Opera house and Ophelia beach. At last, we will attend to the tourist mecca of Copenhagen: Nyhavn quay, which “never sleeps” and where you can still see the places, where H.C. Andersen once lived in.

Tour length: around 2,5 hours, extended version 3 -3,5 hours.

The tour price:
1 - 4 people is 160 euro, the extended option costs 185 euro.
5 - 12 people 200 euro
+12 upon request. For children under 12 years old the tour is free of charge.

Specific features of the tour: you will have to walk a lot because there is no better way to see the city than to walk there. We will visit all the key tourist points of the central part of the city. A journey by metro with no drivers is an adventure itself. The tour will finish in a beautiful place, shown on nearly all the postcards of Copenhagen – Nyhavn quay, where you will have an opportunity to continue learning about the city, by getting a boat trip along the canals of Copenhagen.
