Best regards, Denmark Travel team.

Do you know that in the Middle Ages all Scandinavian states were united into one large Danish kingdom?! Therefore, all the southern lands of contemporary Sweden, the so call province of Skone, were originally Danish territories. Three main cities of Skane are: Malmo, which hosted Eurovision 2013, Lund – a university town and multinational Helsinborg, with over 160 nationalities. Near Helsinborg, on the other side of the Øresund strait is Danish Helsingør with its Kronborg castle – the place where Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” was set. These cities we are going to visit with you today.

Location on the map:

Our trip will start from your hotel. We will rush across one of the most spectacular bridges, which connected Copenhagen and Malmo in 2000. On the way to Sweden you will learn the story of this crossing construction, which was also the subject of an episode for the Discovery channel series "Super Structures”. The Øresund (Sound) crossing is a 4-kilometer tunnel, built on the bottom of the Sound strait, which further comes out on the surface and turns into an artifical 4 km island and then turns into 8-kilometer bridge that in total have the length of about 16 km. Crossing the bridge is adventurous in itself, though not very long. We will soon be in the city of Malmo and our meeting with this welcoming city will start near the medieval fortress of Malmøhus – one of the oldest Renaissance castles.

Here we will learn about the history of Malmo, and will look at one of the local sights – a 190-metre building called Turning torso, which among the residential buildings in Europe yields only to Moscow 264-metre Triumph Palace. During the walk in Malmøhus castle you will hear the story of this place, which was erected in the first half of the 15th century, learn how the building changed transiting from a fortress to a printing house for making coins, and then it was converted into a castle, where the heir Frederik II organized such great parties and feasts that all the nobles of the time dreamt of. You will learn why this place turned into the largest prison in the 19th century and under what circumstances it became a museum.

Then we will go to the City hall square, where we will see the sculpture of the person who managed to take Malmo from the Danes, and will also visit the historic centre of Malmo on the smaller city square (Lilla torg). You can still see many buildings of the 16th century here. Having walked around this square with numerous cafés and restaurants, we will visit the oldest building, in whose yard you will be able to feel the spirit of the medieval Sweden and will pay a visit to the Malmø's symbol - a Griffin wearing a gilded crown – is sitting in the fountain on the top of the globe. Then we will get back to a car and will go to the city of students, Lund.

Lund is the oldest city in Sweden after Sigtuna, and it is also the oldest city related to the Danish history. Lund used to be a residence for Danish kings several times, as well as the residence of the Danish bishops. From the early 11th century and till the reformation of 1536, the main cathedral of the country was in Lundе.

Our first stop in this city will be in the ancient cathedral, which is the centre of Lund history, culture and science. This is the heart of the city, which has already been beating for over 800 years. Being faced with sandstone that gradually gained the noble grey-yellowish colour, it is situated in the centre of a contemporary city, emitting peace, confidence, stability, loyalty to itself and its guests. Coming inside the cathedral or standing next to it, you start sensing – I mean it, an unbelievable thought of the eternity.

Lund cathedral has mainly been preserved the way it was built in the early 12th century. However, the history of the cathedral is older. Lund cathedral was the place where the first Academy was established. It was the only place, where it was possible to get the highest contemporary education. It was on the basis of this Academy that Lund University was formed step by step.

The modern university emerged in 1667, when the Swedes took the territory of Skane and started the process of teaching Swedish culture. This policy implied the use of Swedish only. All the subjects were taught in Latin and Swedish. Originally there were 4 faculties: theological, medical, philosophical and law. The number of students was 100 people. To compare, today there are 45 000 of them, whereas the number of the city residents is 80 000. Lund is indeed a student city as more than a half of local dwellers are students. Today the university offers 50 different specializations – faculties and has branches in Helsinborg and Malmo and at the same time is in the Top 100 best universities of the world.

Having walked around this hospitable city, we will have lunch in one of the local restaurants, and then will get back in the car to go to the town of Helsinborg, located in the narrowest place of the Øresund strait, where the distance between the Danish and Swedish sides is just 4 km. The legend says that it was in Helsinborg, where the first fortress of the Vikings was founded in the 11th century. The walk around the town starts from the Karnan tower, dating back to the 12th century, to the times of that fortress. Here we will speak about complicated relations between the Danes and the Swedes, and will find out how originally Danish area of Helsinborg became Swedish. After that we will go to the top of the Karnan tower and from the height of 35 meters the whole town will be perfectly seen. Even today it is possible to look around the famous tower and those places, where there once was a local church, a chapel and a ditch surrounding these buildings.

Having contemplated local landscapes, we will go to the centre of Helsinborg, where we will visit one of the most popular sights of the town – St Maria’s church and will find out the way a Lutheran service is held. On the way to the ferry, we pass by the City hall square, and then will be cross the Øresund strait, where we'll talk about similarities between Denmark and Sweden, as well as what makes those countries drastically different, such as alcohol issues, immigration policy, etc.

Having crossed the Øresund strait we will visit Danish Helsingør to see the only castle in Denmark, included into the UNESCO World Heritage list – the castle of Kronborg, which is also thought to be the setting of “Hamlet” tragedy by Shakespeare. After a tour around the castle, having seen royal apartments, castle catacombs, bastions with cannons and warrior Ogier the Dane, defending and guarding the Danish kingdom, we return to Copenhagen.

Tour length: around 9 hours.

Tour price:
1 - 3 people 800 euro
4 - 7 people 800 euro plus minibus rental (around 200 euro)
8 - 15 people upon request.

The price includes: car rent and Copenhagen - Malmo - Lund – Helsinborg – Helsingor – Copenhagen transfer, tickets to the paid bridge and the ferry, entrance tickets to the castle of Malmohus, Karnan tower and Kronborg, guide’s services over 8-9 hours. Food and drinks are paid extra.

We offer you a unique opportunity to visit 2 towns in one day: Helsingør on the Danish side of the Øresund strait and Helsinborg on the Swedish one. Both towns are in the narrowest place of the Øresund strait: just 4 km separates the Danish and the Swedish sides, but nevertheless, these cities are very different, due to the history, traditions, architecture and people.

Location on the map:

Helsingør, founded in the early 15th century, can currently boast about its population of 60 000, whereas Swedish Helsinborg with population of 90 000 is considered to be nearly the oldest town in Scandinavia. Helsinborg was found in the 11th century and, according to the legend here was the first Viking fortress built. Both towns are somewhat similar. However, the population of Swedish Helsinborg comprises over 160 nationalities, whereas that of Danish Helsingør does not. We invite you on this trip to see these differences with your own eyes for better understanding of Scandinavian mentality.

Out trip will start from your hotel. We will go to the north of Copenhagen to the town of Helsingør, with its castle, immortalized by Shakespeare in his famous tragedy "Hamlet". Shakespeare described the castle of Kronborg in detail, the scene is set here, although that could be, that he never visited this region. Why and how it happened we will learn during our walk around the castle. This place is annually visited by over 300 000 pilgrims who hope to see the ghost of Hamlet’s father, walking along dark and complicated castle catacombs, as well as give their tribute to the warrior Ogier the Dane dozing in Kronborgs underground casemates.

First we will go to the historic centre of Helsingør and visit the ancient Carmelite monastery, the building of the 15th century, and will hear the story of the "house with ghosts". Then we will walk towards for City hall to see one of the preserved medieval streets in the very heart of Helsingør, and will see the building, where over 400 years the Øresund duty was collected. Oresund duty was a fee paid by the captains of ships to cross the Øresund strait and was the one of the main sources for the Danish treasury revenues over 400 years.

Having walked along the pedestrian street and having passed by the City hall and numerous shops, we will go to the mysterious Kronborg castle, included into the UNESCO World Heritage list. A tour around the royal apartments will show us the way kings of the past lived, celebrated and entertained themselves. We will also learn how the castle was modernized and rebuilt with time, who and when lived there. We will definitely visit the warrior called Ogier the Dane defending and guarding Denmark, and will go along catacombs of the castle, where, if lucky, we will be able to see the ghost of Hamlet’s father.

Well, full of the Danish stories and legends, we will take a ferry to Sweden for an adventure in the town of Helsinborg. Here as soon as you get off the ferry, you will feel something unique, something that cannot be felt anywhere else. A walking tour in the town will start from the tower Karnan built in the 12th century. Here we will speak about complicated relations between the Danes and the Swedes, and will find out how originally Danish area of Helsinborg became Swedish. After that we will go to the top of Karnan tower and from the height of 35 meters the whole town will be perfectly seen. Even today it is possible to look around the famous tower and those places, where there once was a local church, a chapel and a ditch surrounding these buildings.

Having enjoyed local landscapes from above, we will go to the centre of Helsinborg and will stop at the fountain named after Tycho Brahe, a famous Danish astronomer and scientist, will learn the key facts of his life, and the reason of the conflict between him and king Christian IV, as a result of which the scientist had to leave Copenhagen forever and move to Prague.

It is impossible to pass by St Maria’s church without notice. Here we will learn or perhaps even see the way the Lutheran service is held. On our way there will also be the oldest building of Helsinborg, Jacob Hansen’s house, the building preserved from the mid-17 century. Our last stop for today will be the City hall square and building, where we will learn about one of the greatest Swedish commanders and main facts from his prominent life. On the way back, we'll talk with you about similarities between Denmark and Sweden, as well as what makes those countries drastically different, such as alcohol issues, immigration policy, etc.

Tour length: 7 hours.

Tour price:
1 - 3 people 600 euro
4 - 7 people 600 euro plus minibus rental (around 200 euro)
8 - 15 people upon request.

The price includes: car rent and Copenhagen - Helsingør – Copenhagen transfer, ferry tickets Helsingør - Helsinborg – Helsingør, entrance tickets to Kronborg castle and Karnan tower, guide’s services for 7 hours. Food and drinks are not included into the price.

There is an option of this trip without the transfer from Copenhagen. In this case, you will be met by the guide in Helsingør and the tour price will be 470 euros for 2 persons, including ferry tickets Helsingør - Helsinborg – Helsingør, entrance tickets to Kronborg castle and Karnan tower, guide’s services for 5 hours. Food and drinks are not included into the price.

Contemporary Sweden is a great and exciting destination for a curious tourist, especially when it is so close to Copenhagen. A trip to Malmo and Lund will bring the diversity to your holiday, as they are not far from each other, which makes it possible to visit these cities within one day.

We invite you on a trip during which we will find out how it happened so that the original Danish areas of Malmo and Lund transited to Sweden; what the province of Skone looks like, where those cities are situated; how the locals fell about themselves (it is well known that 11% of the local population do not consider themselves either Swedes or Danes); why merchants called the city of Malmo an "Elbow" in old times, why in Lund over a half of the population are students and how the relationship developed  between those two countriesover the past 500 years.

Just within a few metres from the church there is the City hall square, where we will see the sculpture of the person who managed to take Malmo from the Danes, and also will walk along the pedestrian street, full of small shops and souvenir stalls. Malmo is famous not only for its architectural monuments but also shopping since prices here are about 20% lower than in Copenhagen.

We will also attend to the historic centre of the city where we will see different buildings of the 16th century and will pay a visit to the symbol of the city – a Griffin wearing a gilded crown – is sitting in the fountain on the top of the globe. he Swedish province of Skåne is located in the south of the Scandinavian peninsula. Its population is around 1.2 million people. The tribe of Danns came from Skåne in the 200s AD and settled on the islands of Zealand, Falster, Lolland. The name of the tribe gave the name to the whole country – Danmark – «land of Danns».

Three major cities representing today’s Skåne are Malmo, Lund and Helsingborg.

Skåne is a kind of French Riviera for the Swedes, which due to the opening of the 16 km long bridge across the Sound in 2000 linked Danish Copenhagen with Swedish Malmo together. Opening this bridge across the Sound was the beginning of the new era of relations between these two Scandinavian countries. Today you can also take a train and within thirty minutes you will be on the Swedish side, in hospitable Malmo, student Lund or multinational Helsingborg.

If you would like to learn more about Malmo, we can plan a day trip for you to this pretty and friendly city. Read more about the tour around Malmo here.

Old castle on the background of the picturesque nature, interwoven with the history and legends of these places, luxurious interiors and, certainly, nice walks in the parks – these are the things you can expect during our trip around the Land of the Vikings to the Royal Castles of Northern Zealand.

Three spots near Copenhagen are famous for their beauty, interiors and significance – the castle of Frederiksborg, located in Hillerod, Royal residence Fredensborg, in the town with the same name 30 km from Copenhagenа, and «Hamlet’s» castle of Kronborg, which is situated in the town of Helsingor. All the above castles are located so that it is possible to visit all of them within one day. So, let us do it today.

The first point of our tour is the luxurious castle of Frederiksborg, built in the Dutch Renaissance style. Having looked around the castle and having found out its secrets and legends, we will certainly look into its baroque park, with fountains, water canals and royal monograms, laid out with flowers. Wonderful nature, wild ducks on the lake, paths around the reservoir and secluded spaces in a beautiful and neat park – all this, undoubtedly, promotes romance and will not leave you untouched.

Being inspired by the walk in the Frederiksborg park, we will drive to the summer royal residence Fredensborg. This is a well preserved baroque castle, with a miraculous park and notable guardians wearing high fur hats. The castle of Fredensborg is active as a royal residence and it is harder to get there than to other places. The best time to visit Fredensborg is July. During the other months entrance there is restricted, but it is possible to watch the change of the royal guardians, visit the palace park with various mysterious sculptures, along which the Queen walks with her family, and also look into the palace orangery, which supplies fresh vegetables and fruits to the royal table.

The third castle for this day is the second popular and cult place in Denmark after the Little Mermaid – it is the castle of Kronborg, also known as Hamlet’s castle. In fact, Shakespeare did not ever travel to Denmark, but this did not prevent him from describing the castle the way that some 300 thousands of tourists come here every year. Royal suites, the chapel, Danish maritime museum, the somber beauty of Shakespeare’s tragedy and catacombs, where warrior Ogier the Dane is fast asleep while Denmark is out of danger – all this always attracts tourists and here we will have a walk and even a picnic somewhere near the walls of the castle contemplating the views of the Swedish coast and the town of Helsinborg.

On our way back to Copenhagen we will have time to exchange our impressions about the day and of the plans for your following trips in Denmark.

On the place of the former sugar works in the town of Stege, in 119 km to the south of Copenhagen, there is a small factory, where based on ancient recipes, caramel and other treats are produced. All the process is visible for the public and you can try all treats. Moreover, children can take part in the production and make a lollipop for themselves under the guidance of the factory staff.

Caramel factory

In addition to the caramel factory, you can go to the Fun and Play zone situated in the forest, to the north-east of the town of Stege. Here along the 2.4 km route, there is an amphitheatre, forest lakes, different climb facilities and attractions for children as well as adults. Exit to the bridge linking two islands Mon and Sjaelland there is a small settlement of Kalvehave. This is an excellent place for a family picnic, as it is there that the whole maze park was created (named Kalvehave after the nearby town).

Kalvehave maze park

Ivy maze (Efeu labyrint) will be a challenge for both body and brain, if you decide to find out how well you can get around. Having managed to get to the centre of the maze, you will see the entrance to the tower, which gives a panoramic view on the surrounding countryside. The maze occupies around 1 300 m2, and made as fencing, twined with ivy, which was reflected in its name.

If these 1 300 m2 seems childish for you, try and get through the Planet maze, located nearby. The maze area is 5 000 m2 and it is made in in shape of circles, symbolizing different planets. Numerous posters hanging along the paths of the maze tell about planets of the Solar system.

Tour length: 7 hours

Tour price: 400 euros for 2 adults and a child. The price includes the transfer to the park, entrance tickets to the maze park, as well as guide’s services. Food and drinks are paid extra.

We invite you to go on a trip to the oldest amusement park, which was built in Denmark in 1583. The legend says that one girl, walking in the Royal deer forest in the north of Copenhagen, noticed a welling up water spring. Having taken some water, she brought it home. This water was considered to be healing. Thousands of people flocked here. The Danes had a rest near the spring, enjoying the silence and freshness. Actors started performing here. Some booths were built. Then there appeared inns and later attractions. At first attractions were primitive, but gradually they were getting more and more advanced. Currently there are about 100 attractions in the park.

This magnificent, severe and inaccessible at first sight castle was described as early as in the “Hamlet” tragedy by Shakespeare. The history of the castle is over 600 years in total. Taking into account its geographical location, it is evident that from the strategic point of view it is a very comfortable place, giving an opportunity to control the strait. It is the narrowest place of the Sound strait (just 4 km from Denmark to Sweden), and the Sound is the shortest sea way from the North to the Baltic Sea.

Kronborg castle

In the 15th century Danish king Erik of Pomerania erected a castle, being named Krogen. The model of that castle is displayed in the first hall, next to the Erik’s painting. Krogen was indeed a strong building, equal to the current castle by area (79 m by 79 m). Having built Krogen, Erik became a real master of the strait. He introduced a duty for all foreign vessels crossing it. The size of the duty was one English noble – the most stable currency of the time.

Ship cannons of the time could not damage Krogen. On the whole, that was the best argument to pay. Thus the castle appeared and became the symbol of power, might and grandeur of the Danish crown. 150 years later, another Danish king Frederik II decided to give the castle another more pleasant name, "Kronborg" – the crown castle.

Video about Kronborg castle:

The castle is surrounded by cannons along its perimeter. They fire salute on queen’s birthday, greet the royal ship as well as fire blank charges on other special occasions. These are the oldest operating cannons in Denmark. All of them were made in the 1760s.

The main attraction for visitors is in the castle catacombs - complicated, dark, wet, intriguing and sometimes frightening, where the national warrior, hero and defender Ogier the Dane is dozing.
